"Masquerade" Part 2 of 3. Script by J.M. DeMatteis. Pencils and Inks by Sal Buscema. Cover by Sal Buscema. Due to a bizarre sequence of events, Vermin (aka Edward Whelan) and Dr. Kafka are captives of the deformed mutates! Where did these grotesque creatures come from? Strangely enough…from the same place that Vermin did…the castle of Baron Zemo II. But the mutates don't want to kill Vermin, they want him as their leader! When Vermin and his old friends raid a local supermarket, the web-slinger challenges the freakish horde! Unfortunately though, Spider-Man falls in battle and becomes a prisoner himself! However, inside the creatures' makeshift headquarters; Dr. Kafka and Edward encourage the mutates to calmly resolve their issues and set their captives free. The mutates agree, and the tense conflict appears headed towards peaceful resolution until the one man shows up that could ruin everything…Baron Zemo! Wow, has the son of the Third Reich's top scientist come back to reclaim his creations? And how will Vermin react to seeing the man who transformed him into a hideous monster years ago? Shockingly, in just a matter of seconds, the whole situation goes from sensible to savage…and set to explode next issue!
